Episode 106:
Navigating menopause when HRT isn't an option
October is both breast cancer and menopause awareness month and this episode is blending
together both for inspiration and insights.
“Habits are about becoming a part of who you are, so you're not having to force them. It becomes like you and your identity. So you're someone who likes to go out for walks, who goes to the gym, or gets to bed and reads a book to unwind. But you've also got to be very intentional about not making things take over your life so you don't have time for rest and sleep, because we do need that sleep.”
— Nicola Farndell
“I'm trying to make sure I have good sleep hygiene. But there's no denying the fact that when I do that early workout, I never have a bad day, it just sets me up. I'm pumped and ready to go.”
— Sarah Cawood
October is both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Menopause Awareness Month and today’s conversation is going to bring both of these very important topics to you.
I’m chatting with the lovely Sarah Cawood about her personal journey through menopause, particularly in the context of being a breast cancer survivor. Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago and is navigating her recovery with the challenges of an array of menopause symptoms. We discuss the challenges of navigating menopause without hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the importance of nutrition and exercise, and the impact of menopause on relationships and intimacy. Sarah shares her experiences with various supplements, the significance of self-care and skincare, and offers practical tips for women facing similar challenges.
We get pretty deep and intimate in this conversation, but do so for a reason - we need to get comfortable talking about menopause, our bodies, and how we’re feeling, so we can support one another and get the help we need to feel healthy and happy.
In our chat today we’re talking about:
How nutrition and reducing alcohol intake can significantly impact health.
Navigating menopause without HRT and finding what works for you through testing and learning.
Recognising that menopause symptoms can persist even after periods stop, especially post-cancer.
Why living healthy must be about finding balance between healthy habits and enjoying life.
Being comfortable with having open and intimate discussions about vaginal health and sex to support your wellbeing.
How self-care routines, including skincare, can enhance mental health and confidence during menopause.
Movement being key to managing menopause symptoms and joint pain.
Why women should always prioritise their health and seek support when needed.
The importance of being kind to yourself during your menopause journey.
