LIVE HEALTHY NOW - Episode 12

Surviving cancer and thriving

Watch.

Is taking care of yourself really selfish?

What if it’s the thing that’s going to make you a much better, happier person and reduce the chance of you getting the news nobody wants to get - you have cancer?

Nicola Mercer host of the Live Healthy Now podcast

“To give everyone else what you’re trying to give them you have to be the best version of you and a big thing is to model that behaviour to kids because they do what they see. It’s important to teach other people to value yourself.”

— Nicola Mercer

“We do take so much for granted and think we’ve got so much time yet we’ve all got limited time so it’s about how we choose to spend it.”

—Gabby Mottershead

Gabrielle Mottershead talks to the Live healthy Now podcast about surviving cancer and thriving

As a wife, mother, family CEO, and a full-time corporate career working long hours with lots of travel, Gabby was running on fumes all day, every day. Her life was hectic so there was never any time to think about the lifestyle choices she was making and what effect these might be having on her. This was until she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer at only 44 years old.

Gabby began a new journey, walking a very different path to the one she expected to be on. The place she’s at though is far better than where she expected to be at this stage of her life, even though cancer is now a part of her story.

This is a powerful episode sharing a story of a very normal woman who lived life fast, thinking this was how it had to be. I know so many of you will associate with this way of existing, believing you’re stuck and there’s no alternative. But Gabby is proof that it can be different, and she doesn’t want you to face a cancer diagnosis before realising this and being forced to take action to change. Taking control of your health and how you feel is the key to living the long, happy life you want.

In this episode we explore:

  • Reflecting on your life after a cancer diagnosis.

  • Navigating the next chapter of your cancer journey when your treatment is over.

  • Why taking care of yourself is the ultimate form of self-care and far from about you being selfish.

  • Dealing with the mental noise and feelings of guilt when life has to get back to normal.

  • Taking responsibility for your health and wellbeing for prevention and preservation.

  • The power of combining traditional medicine and treatments with functional medicine.

  • Why the simple things like time with your family are the route to true pleasure and joy.

  • Being done with cancer and finding a way to move forward with positivity and balance.

About Gabby:

Gabby Mottershead is from Manchester, England and is the founder of Confidence After Cancer, Gabby provides coaching and support for women after cancer treatment.

She was inspired to start this non-profit based support and coaching provision after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of inflammatory breast cancer in 2008 aged 44. Following chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiotherapy, she suffered with depression and lack of confidence. Gabby realised there’s lots of support for cancer patients during their treatment, but when that ends you are suddenly left on your own. She used social media connect with other people on social media and set up a support group, and was stunned by the number of women who also felt they had nowhere to turn as they began their cancer treatment recovery.

Gabby is an experienced business and life coach. She is also a practitioner of NLP, a master Reiki healer, and she is passionate about Nutritional Healing. Her mission is to inspire healthy minds and healthy bodies.
