The importance of fitness during pregnancy and every stage of your life
Watch.
Being pregnant can be a very special time of a woman’s life, however it can also bring with it lots of new and scary health challenges, both physical ones and mental too. For many pregnant women, there is fear and uncertainty around fitness during pregnancy and also in the post-natal period once they have their baby.
“There’s much more awareness from brands now that when you’re pregnant and carrying a child you can still wear workout clothes because you can still workout, and there’s been a lot of athletes who have been very open about training whilst pregnant.”
— Nicola Mercer
“Strength training is vital for any woman. After the age of 35 we start to lose 5-8% muscle mass every decade so if you’re not rebuilding that muscle you’ll get weaker and weaker. Strength training is also more effective for weight loss because it builds muscle which helps to better support your metabolism.”
—Bittany Scott
Today’s guest Brittany Scott is helping to break down the fear and worry about exercising during pregnancy and what to do once your baby arrives.
We explore some of the biggest challenges women face not just in the immediate post-natal stage, but that some experience for years and even decades after giving birth. Many women see and feel significant changes after having a baby and feel they have to just accept the impact of these, which for some can cause ongoing issues like low confidence, lack of libido, pain, low self-belief and many others that impact their overall health and wellness.
We want you to understand why building a strong body and mind through exercise is key to living strong and healthy throughout every season of your life.
In the episode we talk openly about:
The term peri-natal and the different stages of pre and post pregnancy.
The big shift in advice for working out and exercising when pregnant.
How and why to exercise before, during and after pregnancy.
The biggest struggles many women have post-pregnancy including weight gain and a weak pelvic floor.
The avoidance of talking about your pelvic floor, and why we must encourage open conversation on this topic to better support females of all ages.
The importance of strength training in every season of your life.
Easy ways to make time and get started at home with exercise and fitness.
