Alcohol and Your Health: The Risks, Rewards, and Road to Recovery

Watch.

There are two types of people - those who have a drink problem and those who don’t. Is this really true?

It’s been the way levels of alcohol dependancy have been categorised for many years, but things are slowly starting to shift when it comes to thinking about what we drink.

“A lot of people only reach this point because of having a health scare themselves, or somebody who they love very close to them has a health scare, or they lose somebody they love and it puts their own mortality into perspective. It triggers them to realise things have to change in their life. We shouldn’t have to wait to be reactive, we have to choose to get in control ourselves. ”

— Nicola Mercer

“It becomes a problem when it starts interfering with your relationships, your health, your work and productivity, your relationship with your kids.

It’s the start of a slippery slope when you use alcohol to change your emotional state.”

We’re exploring this topic with guest expert Carol Urry, an alcohol free and habits coach. We dive into why so many people feel it’s normal to drink and why this stands in the way of many people choosing to limit or even no longer drink.  We discuss the effects alcohol has on your overall health and why pausing to think about your drinking might be something that you need to do to achieve the health and life goals you have.

In the episode we talk about:

  • The role alcohol plays in society and the expectation there is to drink alcohol.

  • Reasons why most people drink.

  • How easy it is to move from occasional to dependant drinker.

  • The role of habits in drinking and wanting more alcohol.

  • The impact alcohol has on your health and why it’s so much more than a hangover the following day.

  • The types of drinkers - liberated and fixated - and why this might indicate whether alcohol has become a problem for you.

  • Alcohol becoming a bigger problem for women in the menopause phase of their life.

  • How to take steps to reduce your alcohol intake or aim to go totally sober.

  • The main reasons people choose to stop drinking and the biggest benefits it has on their lives.
