“Strong is what we need to help women and girls to prioritise for all of the right reasons. The more we just normalise being strong in every way physically and mentally the more that’s going to help shift away those challenges we have as females with our body, our appearance and so on.”

— Nicola Mercer

“You made that decision to wake up in the dark and get on the spin bike or get on the treadmill or go for a walk. It’s a big tick for yourself. You can finish and think, I’ve done that for me, I believe in myself, I’m investing in myself, and you can take that int your day.”

Today we’re exploring the connection between women, sport, and the pursuit of a healthier, more confident future. Our guest is the inspiring Becky MacDermid, a dedicated netball player and CrossFit enthusiast. We delve into the transformative power of sport for women, focusing on resilience, confidence, and the crucial role women play in driving equality and diversity in the sports arena.

As we see reduced activity in kids and a rapid decline in adult activity levels, this is a very relevant conversation that we hope inspires you to think about how impactful sport might be for your own health and that of your children.

In our conversation we chat about:

  • What sport actually is, and why it’s probably not what you think it is!

  • How sport has shaped Becky’s confidence and resilience.

  • The connection between women growing up playing sport and those in senior leadership roles.

  • The ripple effects that are experienced when you are active

  • The importance of being active and participating in sports as a form of positive role modelling

  • The need for female role models in sports to inspire and encourage the younger generation.

  • Concerning statistics from the 2022 Sport England report, particularly the gender gap in activity levels among children and young people.

  • Beliefs women have with sport and strength training that holds them back from taking part in these activities.

  • Why we need to shift away from focusing on body shape, size, and aesthetics to knowing the value of feeling strong.
