Why it's time to ditch the diet culture holding us back from health and happiness
Watch.
Has dieting ever made you get the happy life you want?
The long term results you maintain?
“A lot of people are only thinking about food in the terms of what come sin and what goes out and just trying to maintain weight. But I really want to see it as so much more than that. We’re not going on a diet, we’re not trying to carry on with this rollercoaster ride of how we eat to try to look a certain way.”
— Nicola Mercer
“Once you step away from diet culture, it’s not just simply stepping away from and making the decision to not diet anymore. It actually helps you then become more compassionate, more accepting and actually view food as nourishment and view exercise as a privilege and as a joy rather than calories and how much I’ve got to burn and punishment.”
— Kimberley Stacey
The average woman is said to spend between 17 to 31 years of her life dieting. Diet culture is designed to keep us dieting because it’s creating a $1billion global business.
Kimberley Stacey joins the podcast today to talk about a topic that is so important in the world we live in and is something that’s very aligned to my personal and business values following 30+ years stuck believing my self-worth and value were linked to the way I looked and how much I weighed on the scales. Kim is the founder and head coach of Body Image Fitness in Newcastle and advocates non-diet fitness driving much needed change around diet culture and exercise, helping people to realise that anybody can workout and be fit, regardless of how their body looks.
In our conversation we talk about:
What diet culture is and the impact it has on women to feel they need to look a certain way.
Striving for happiness and self-worth with diets and exercise.
The relationship you have with food and diets on your overall health and happiness.
Re-focusing what we eat to be about the nourishment and overall health benefits it provides.
How important exercise is beyond the perception of it being just a tool to lose weight.
How the fitness industry likes diversity and representation.
The value of functional fitness to live strong with full mobility.
3 tips to help you begin your journey to ditching the diet and exercising to feel strong.
