Episode 98:

Embracing menopause with the power of movement

Why movement and exercise is key to thriving through and beyond menopause.

“So many women probably have struggled with confidence most of their adult life. We know this is a problem many women have. And then perimenopause comes along and things change - that might include gaining body weight, changing body shape and size. They just know their own body has changed and they feel very detached and like they've lost themselves.”

“What they were doing before menopause doesn't necessarily work anymore. And then they try to find something that does, but they sometimes come at it again from that space of what should I be doing, rather than what do I enjoy doing in terms of movement? What do I enjoy now?”

— Melanie Griffiths

Do you struggle to make time to exercise? Or is it more about hating the gym and thinking that all kinds of exercise are just too hard?

Join me as I chat with guest Melanie Griffiths about her journey of healing from cancer and how it led her to prioritise her own health and realise the significant role moving your body plays in living long and strong. Melanie shares the importance of movement as a healthy habit and how it can be a powerful tool for mind-body connection, offering her own experience of using movement as a form of meditation and mindfulness. Melanie also discusses the significance of menopause as a rite of passage and the need for women to embrace this stage of life with confidence and self-esteem. Doing this she believes, is massively supported through daily movement and exercise during menopause, highlighting the importance of embracing and enjoying your new body and finding joy in the way you move.

In this episode we explore:

  • What shifted for Melanie when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer to realise the power of your health.

  • How she navigated her healing journey with a holistic approach.

  • The path menopause showed Melanie about caring for yourself and why we must shift away from how society often sidelines menopausal women.

  • The power of movement as a key healthy habit to improve overall wellbeing and create a strong mind-body connection.

  • Embracing your own menopausal season of life as part of your life journey and why you must prioritise self-care before you reach menopause.

  • The need to focus on strength and confidence rather than trying to reverse physical changes as you enter perimenopause.

  • The benefits of dancing, having fun, and connecting with the body for midlife women, including Carnival Dance.

  • Melanie’s three simple steps to incorporate movement into your daily life: finding something you enjoy, keeping it simple, and making it a daily habit.
