A simple midlife reset for when you’ve had enough

The overthinking loop that’s keeping you stuck

She’s smart. Successful. Driven.

She’s the one everyone relies on. The one who makes it all work.

But lately, something feels off.

There’s a quiet tension building beneath the surface. A constant hum of overthinking, second-guessing, and trying to juggle it all. She wonders how she got here—and why, after ticking all the boxes, she still doesn’t feel quite right.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. And you’re not broken.

This week’s Women’s Health Unwrapped guest, business coach Libby Langley, has lived this story too. And in her honest, down-to-earth way, she shares how chasing the “shoulds” nearly broke her—until she decided to do it differently.

It’s a story I’ve lived myself, and one I have heard so many other women share, and supported many clients to navigate and make changes to create a different story for themselves and their lives. Overthinking and feeling out of alignment seems to peak in midlife when perimenopause and the hormonal chaos it often brings with it strikes. It has you feeling like you’re no longer yourself, losing your mind, and fearing how you can keep going.

I’m going to dive into all of this so you can shift from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to in control and thriving.

Libby’s wake-up call: Success isn’t always what it seems

Libby was the classic high-achiever. She rose quickly in her career, took on senior roles, built a team, ran a thriving business. From the outside, she looked like she had it all.

But inside? She was exhausted. Disconnected. Frustrated.

She’d followed the script—do well, keep going, aim higher. But she’d never stopped to ask if it actually made her happy. And when burnout hit, everything cracked open. She walked away from the hustle, scaled back her business, and started asking different questions.

Questions like:

  • What if success wasn’t about always doing more?

  • What if I stopped chasing the next thing and asked what I really want?

  • What if I didn’t need to prove anything anymore?

  • What if happiness isn’t an output of always aiming higher?

Her answers reshaped everything.

Taking a pause to slow down the overthinking and reflect on what you need is such a powerful way to begin creating a life you feel aligned to.

The “shoulds” are stealing your joy

If you’re a high-achieving midlife woman, chances are you’ve spent decades being who you thought you should be:

  • The capable one at work

  • The steady partner or mother

  • The one who keeps going, no matter what

But that version of you may no longer fit.

What Libby learned is that the roles we play and the rules we follow aren’t always ours. And they can quietly drain the life out of us. Especially in midlife, when the hormonal and emotional shifts make it almost impossible to keep pretending. You start questioning things. You feel the friction. And you wonder: Is this really it? Shouldn’t I feel better than this?

Yes. You should. And you can.

Your reset starts with one honest question

Here’s the truth: You don’t need to throw your life in the air to feel better. You just need to pause. Reflect. And ask yourself what you actually want now. What is it that matters to you and why? What do you need and want to live in alignment and truly feel fulfilled and happy?

Libby’s three-step reset is a simple way to start:

  1. Be brutally honest with yourself. What do you want? Not what’s expected. Not what looks good. What matters to you?

  2. Choose your daily non-negotiables. Start small. One thing each day that supports your vision. Let it anchor you.

  3. Repeat, refine, and keep showing up. Let your actions match your values. Adjust as needed. You’re allowed to grow.

This isn’t about reinvention. It’s about a rest that feels real.

You don’t need to overhaul your whole life.

But you do need a reset—one that helps you step out of the noise and back into clarity. This is your moment to stop chasing happiness through hustle, and start creating it with intention.

💭 Choose what matters. 💛 Act on it daily. 🌿 Let that build the version of life that feels true to you.

You’ve done “should” for long enough. Now it’s time for something that feels like yours, and a life that feels aligned to who you really are.
