THE POWER AND IMPACT WHEN WOMEN VALUE THEIR HEALTH

As we recognise and celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2023 I want to share with you why I believe that women have the power to drive the change needed for this year’s theme #EmbraceEquity and why their health is the key to making this happen.

One of the greatest risks for women today, particularly in the developed Western world, is their health. There’s a huge increase in heart disease with it now killing twice as many women as breast cancer each year. And the cause of this? Primarily lifestyle factors.

It has been scientifically proven that lifestyle factors such as lack of good quality sleep, unmanaged and high stress, excess alcohol, lack of exercise, poor diet and smoking, are all putting you at a greater risk of developing diseases such as Alzheimers, dementia, heart disease, high blood pressure and many types of cancers. And for women, who are still juggling their roles as primary carers alongside building careers and pursuing their own ambitions, these factors are putting them at an even greater risk than men.

The world is changing rapidly, and women are leading the charge in many areas, including politics, business, and technology. However, despite the progress we’re starting to make, women still face unique health challenges that can hinder their ability to make a positive impact. That's why it's more important than ever for women to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

I know that by taking care of your health you’re going to feel strong, capable, resilient. You’ll believe in yourself and be willing to try new things, go after your dreams, drive change and new opportunities. Not just for yourself but for others, maybe even the wider world like I’m trying to do! Women really can drive positive changes in the world and continue to make strides towards gender equality when they feel healthy, strong, and believe in themselves.

So how do we make this change happen?

Taking better care of yourself is key. By taking care of their own health, women can ensure that they have the energy, focus, and stamina they need to be effective leaders, role models and change-makers. They will show their friends, families, and communities that they too can achieve their goals when they take care of themselves.

On the theme of equity for this year’s IWD when women invest in and value their health they build resilience and strength. The self-belief and confidence that comes with this empowers them to face adversity and work to break down some of the systemic barriers and challenges many women continue to face. This can help to break down barriers and create a more equitable society for all.

It all begins with awareness of what being healthy means and why it is so important. We need to share insights, inform, and engage everyone in understanding what healthy living looks like, and explain why we’re facing so many health risks because of our lifestyle choices. When we create this focus, build knowledge and provide support to live healthy, the first steps can be taken to positively shift the health of women. Only then will we begin to see the ripple effect from this collective of women who are leading the way in self-belief, self-worth, and self-love.

This is the power of women who value themselves when they take care of their health.
